While badges and all microcredentials hold value and have the power to give students agency, the current approach is flawed. If we design badges like we do courses, we perpetuate an institution-centric mindset instead of adopting a learner-centric perspective.Check out my latest article on badges. It's a bit spicy 🌶 🌶 🌶 and might ruffle some feathers, but it’s clear that the badge concept in higher ed is stuck in a 1990s mindset. This is unfortunate because badges have the potential to transform higher education. There’s more to come, but let’s start with this article.Many of you are in this space. Spicy Post Warning 🌶 The term "transformation" has been hijacked by those focusing on mere transactions. It’s time to reclaim and redefine what true campus transformation means. Don't be misled into believing that transactional cloud technology is transforming your campus. Just ask the schools that have implemented new cloud solutions; after spending 3-4 years and millions of dollars, they have not truly transformed.They are still searching for the promised transformation and all they have is issues with post production transactions. Perhaps it's because what they experienced was transactional modernization, not true transformation. Logging into a new system and performing the same processes is not transformational. When someone claims that your SIS, ERP, and CRM implementation will be transformational, ask them how these systems will help students graduate, enroll more students, and create a seamless experience driven by data.In the next few years, we will compare the numbers of these institutions who were promised transformation but was provided a better transactional system.It’s time to reclaim the term "transformation."
