Update: OpenAI's status page indicates the first issue was resolved at 4:45 a.m. Pacific Time, but the service is continuing to have problems.
OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot is currently suffering a major outage that is making the generative AI service unavailable for "some users," according to the company's system status page.
ChatGPT has been down for several hours, with the chatbot unable to respond to queries via the web and mobile apps due to an internal server error. The company says it first started working on the issue at 12:21 a.m. Pacific Time on June 4.
ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly users, according to OpenAI. Apple has reportedly closed in on a deal with OpenAI that should see ChatGPT being used to power new features in iOS 18, Apple's next major iPhone operating system update, so outages like this one could potentially affect millions more users.
ChatGPT also suffered a partial outage last month when Microsoft's Bing API stopped functioning, leaving the chatbot and many other services unable to search the web.

No real loss.
There are already a lot of businesses that rely on OpenAI services. I think for them it is a big loss.

It amuses me to see the hate and fear of AI on a TECH site. LOL!
Chat GPT is great if you know how to use it, and it beats googling. Just two examples.
I was looking for a song that I remembered from my youth. I roughly knew the name of the artist, it was on the tip of my tongue. I tried googling, I tried names that I thought sounded like the artist. Nothing. I tried top 100 lists from various years. Nothing. Took me 30 minutes and then I gave up. Decided to try ChatGPT. Described the rough time frame. Describes what I thought may be the name of the artist. Described what I was looking for. After just two minutes I had the name of the artist and song.
Next was I had to do something on my Vespa scooter. I am not familiar with motors so I tried googling and I tried Youtube. But I couldn't find what I was looking for because I had no clue what the name of the part was. :) So I told ChatGPT what my problem was, asked how to solve it, and most important what keywords I would need to google and search Youtube. It named me the part and how to find it.
So yeah I could have kept googling and maybe I could have had the same results but it's way faster and you can train it. Like I said a few times, ChatGPT is just like the buddy you can ask anything.

And they saying this thing is a future that everyone should rely upon??Kinda laughable they cannot even keep their servers running. Bring the fully local version or gtfo. Period
Well, to be fair, big companies such as Apple have server outages too, from time to time.

I’ll share my experience of the outage in case it could be useful for anyone.
An hour ago, I took my iPhone to identify the species of a fly I had in my window, using ChatGPT 4o. I made some pictures of the fly (it looked like a fruit fly), and then… after chatting a bit with ChatGPT -it was working for me- I saw there was an update for the iPhone app.
I updated the app and then, and only then, it stopped working. I was a bit sad because I hadn’t uploaded the fly pictures to it, and now it was giving me error messages…
So I closed the app, and just 10 minutes ago, I tried again, and it works now for me. I’ve been able to upload the fly pictures, and it told me it is a Ceratitis capitata
Then, I told it to draw a picture of this species… and the drawing is colorful and artistic, sure, but it doesn’t look like the fly on my window, but rather a fly painted by some eccentric artist.

In my opinion, if there’s an area that could improve ChatGPT, is on its image generation engine, Dall-e.

Yeah last night I asked chat GPT about a character in dune. What does Duncan look like?
It drew a picture that didn’t look like anyone in the movie so I went to google instead, and it just showed me a photo.
Why can’t chat gpt just show a photo? Why does it draw artistic **** instead?
Is it copyright? If so, why can google show the photo but not chat gpt?
