OU baseball defeats Duke in NCAA Tournament elimination game, will face UConn Sunday night (2024)

Coach Skip Johnsonand theninth-seeded OU baseball teamwill try to stave off elimination in the NCAA regionals Sunday against Duke.

Malachi Witherspoon retired Duke's seven, eight and nine hitters to defeat the Blue Devils.

Mid 8: Duke scores two runs, Sooners escape inning with lead

Duke's AJ Gracia crushed a two-run shot to deep right center off Carson Atwood. Atwood pitched a 1/3 of an inning and allowed two runs before Malachi Witherspoon got the Sooners out of the inning.

OU still leads 4-3 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

End 7: Michael Snyder's RBI-single scores Easton Carmichael

OU third baseman Michael Snyder ripped an RBI-single to left field, scoring Easton Carmichael.

OU leads Duke 4-1 heading to the eighth. Loud "O-U" chants are ringing through L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Carson Atwood will relieve Grant Stevens in the eighth.

Mid 7: Grant Stevens continues stellar outing

Grant Stevens has allowed six hits and one earned run, while striking out seven. He walked one batter in the seventh.

Stevens has thrown 104 pitches.

End 6: Sooners leave two on base

Jackson Nicklaus singled and Rocco Garza-Gongora walked to give OU two baserunners in the bottom of the sixth.

The Sooners didn't capitalize as they ended the inning with two strikeouts.

Mid 6: Grant Stevens retires Duke in order

Grant Stevens is dealing.

Stevens struck out two Blue Devils in the top of the sixth. He's struck out five in six innings.

End 5: OU goes down one-two-three

Easton Carmichael grounded out, Jaxon Willits struck out and Michael Snyder flew out.

Mid 5: Duke third base coach Ty Blankmeyer tossed

Duke third base coach Ty Blankmeyer was ejected following the end of the top of the fifth inning.

Blankmeyer appeared to say something to the home plate umpire before being quickly tossed.

Duke recorded two hits in the top half.

End 4: Three Sooners reach base

Three Sooners reached base but OU didn't add a run.

Rocco Garza-Gongora was hit by a pitch, Jason Walk worked a walk and John Spikerman reached on a fielder's choice.

Garza-Gongora was thrown out at home by Chase Krewson to end the inning.

Mid 4: Nothing doing for Duke

Grant Stevens allowed a walk but forced a double play to end the top half of the fourth.

End 3: OU threatens, leaves three runners on base

Bryce Madron was hit by a pitch, Easton Carmichael reached on a fielder's choice and Jaxon Willits walked.

Kendall Pettis struck out looking with two outs and the bases loaded to end the inning.

Mid 3: Defensive plays rule inning

Duke recorded one hit in the top if the third but incredible defensive plays by the Sooners ruled the inning.

Jackson Nicklaus made a sweet play in the infield to record an out before Kendall Pettis made a leaping catch at the wall to end the inning.

End 2: Sooners take two-run lead

OU tied the game at one following an RBI-single by Rocco Garza-Gongora that scored Jaxon Willits.

Freshman designated hitter Jason Walk, batting ninth, tripled to right center, scoring Garza-Gongora and Jackson Nicklaus to make it 3-1 Sooners. John Spikerman appeared like he was going to extend OU's lead before AJ Gracia robbed him of a home run.

There might be two SportsCenter top 10 plays tonight.

Mid 2: Duke adds a hit, Kendall Pettis wows again

Grant Stevens allowed one hit and struck out one Duke hitter in the top of the second inning.

To end the inning, Kendall Pettis made an incredible diving catch in foul territory. Catches like these have become routine for Pettis, who likely cemented himself into SportsCenter's top 10 plays again.

End 1: Sooners muster one hit, caught stealing twice

John Spikerman led off the inning with a walk before being caught stealing second base. He appeared injured on the play but walked off on his own power and ran out to center field after the inning to play defense.

Bryce Madron struck out swinging, while Easton Carmichael singled but was caught stealing for the third out.

Mid 1: Duke opens scoring

Duke opened the scoring Sunday afternoon after AJ Gracia singled in Zac Morris to make it a 1-0 Blue Devils lead.

OU starter Grant Stevens also allowed a leadoff double by Morris, but was able to get out of the inning with a double play.

First pitch set for 4 p.m.

First pitch for OU vs. Duke baseball, which is currently in a weather delay, is set for 4 p.m. Gates will open at 3:30 p.m.

Less than an hour before the 2 p.m. scheduled start for OU-Duke, it was announced the game was in a weather delay.

A new scheduled first pitch time has yet to be announced.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the opening of gates at L. Dale Mitchell Park will be delayed.
