Kids love to cook. Here are 6 easy recipes for kids that can be made in a solar cooker. Because they are so simple, these recipes are the perfect choice for pizza box solar ovens. These recipes are so simple that most children as young as pre-school through 6th should be able to prepare their own dish, but older children may also enjoy these fast cooking ideas. I choose these recipes because the only actual cooking needed is for something – usually cheese- to melt. So they are perfect to make in the Science Project for KidsPie Pan Solar Cooker .

S'mores are a very popular snack. Because the chocolate melts so quickly, it is perfect for the solar oven.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 graham cracker squares
  • 1 cup mini-marshmallows
  • ½ cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Break the graham cracker squares along the scored lines and place in the bottom of the pie tin.
  2. Spread the mini marshmallows on top.
  3. Spread the chocolate chips on top of the marshmallows.
  4. Place the pan into a turkey cooking bag and twist shut.
  5. Place the pie pan up very close to the reflector.
  6. Heat until the marshmallows are hot and the chips are melted.

Notes

The time needed to actually melt the chocolate will depend on how hot the temperature inside the bag gets. Be sure to place the reflector and the pie pan in a hot sunny spot and keep it pointed towards the sun.

My smore's took 40 minutes to heat on a 95 degree day. Note: the chocolate chips do not lose their shape when heated.

For a smaller serving, use a pot pie size pie pan, a small cooking bag, and half the ingredients.

Nachos are a perfect treat for kids to make in a solar oven because all you need to do is melt the cheese.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups tortilla chips
  • ½ - 1 cup of cheddar or Mexi-blend cheese

Instructions

  1. Place the tortilla chips in the pie pan.
  2. Sprinkle the cheese on top.
  3. Place the pan into a turkey cooking bag and twist shut.
  4. Place the pie pan up very close to the reflector.
  5. Heat until the cheese is melted.

Notes

The time to actually melt the cheese will depend on how hot the temperature inside the bag gets. Be sure to place the reflector and the pie pan in a hot sunny spot and keep it pointed towards the sun.

My nachos took 20 - 30 minutes to heat on a 95 degree day.

Variations: Add several spoonfuls of chili on top.
For a Frito Chili PIe, use Fritos, chili, cheese, and onions.

English Muffin Pizza is a quck and easy snack from the solar oven or the microwave.

Ingredients

  • 1 English muffin, split in half
  • 4 TB pizza sauce
  • ¼ - ½ cup mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 4 -6 pepperoni slices

Instructions

  1. Split the English muffin in halves, and place both in the pie pan.
  2. Spread the pizza sauce on the muffin.
  3. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the sauce.
  4. Place the pepperoni on top of the cheese.
  5. Place the pie pan into the cooking bag and twist tie shut
  6. Place the pan up next to the reflector.
  7. Heat until the cheese is melted and the sauce and pepperoni are hot.

My English muffin pizzas took 40 minutes to heat on a 95 degree day.

Cheese Crisp or Cheese Quesadilla is very simple to make in a solar oven or microwave.

Ingredients

  • 1 8 in flour tortilla
  • ½ cup cheddar or Mexi-blend cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Place the flour tortilla into the pie pan.
  2. Spread the cheese on half of the tortilla.
  3. Fold the tortilla over on itself.
  4. Place the pie pan into the cooking bag. Twist and tie closed with a twisty tie.
  5. Place the pie tin up next to the reflector.
  6. Heat until the cheese is melted.

My cheese crisp took 40 minutes to heat on a 95 degree day.
