IXL has a strong focus on math and language arts, while Khan Academy offers a wider range of subjects. Consider your learning style: If your child is a visual learner, then you may prefer Khan Academy's videos and articles. If your child is an auditory learner, then you may prefer IXL's games and quizzes.

While we offer memberships for online practice that are widely used by teachers and homeschool parents to support their teaching, we are not an accredited school and are not authorized to verify or issue school credits. Completing skills on IXL will not equate to proof of grade completion or transcripts.

Unsuccessful, more stress than learn!

Tracking their progress was another nightmare. The reports were hard to read and didn't offer any real insight into each student's specific issues. I found myself spending more time trying to decipher the data than actually teaching.

Limited Engagement: One major drawback of IXL is its emphasis on repetitive practice rather than fostering deep understanding. The program often focuses on isolated skills without providing real-world context or opportunities for critical thinking.

IXL does not always pre-teach the material before jumping in with the questions. But if you get a question wrong, it does explain why and gives you the right answer. I consider it a “backward” kind of teaching. This is especially true of the math portions and the geography questions we have come across.

I love that IXL is a technology-based learning system. My students are really into technology and this allows them indulge in math in a fun way. I evaluate my students based on how well they do on each section of IXL.

Teaching students with ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences requires a highly individualized approach. High school math teacher Barbara Knight found that implementing IXL Math and the Real-Time Diagnostic in her classroom was key in differentiating instruction for students with special needs.

The Real-Time Diagnostic is always available. Come back often! Try to answer 10–15 questions a week to keep your levels up to date.

IXL recommends that students initially aim to diagnose until they reveal complete diagnostic data. This should take about 45 minutes to 1 hour per subject and can be done over multiple sessions. After getting their initial levels, students should answer about 10 to 15 questions per week in the Real-Time Diagnostic.

This study found that higher IXL usage leads to better performance. In both math and ELA, students scored better on the Keystone Exams when they reached proficiency in more skills on IXL. Using IXL with fidelity was also associated with better Keystone performance.
